2027 Range Rover Sport vs. BMW X6 Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos
The full-size Range Rover was the original luxury SUV, and in the years since its introduction, the brand has expanded to include several different sizes, with the most popular of these being the midsize Range Rover Sport. It took competitors quite a few years to catch up, but now, luxury SUVs are commonplace, and BMW has a competitor to the Range Rover Sport in the form of the X6. But is this fairly new model a real competitor for the longtime segment leader? Let’s take a closer look and find out.
Range Rover Sport VS BMW X6
Both of these vehicles come with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive as standard, and starting prices are predictably similar. But that’s it for your drivetrain options in the standard X6. Those who want more power out of their X6 can upgrade to either the X6 M60i or X6 M Competition, both of which are powered by a 4.4-liter V8. The Range Rover Sport is offered in more trims and with more drivetrain options. There is a second, more powerful version of the 3.0-liter engine, as well as two different 4.4-liter V8 options. But what really sets the Range Rover Sport apart is the plug-in hybrid option, which has no available counterpart in the X6. The top Range Rover Sport SV trim offers a few more horsepower than the X6 M Competition, but the real advantage of the SV is that it’s offered with superior luxury and customization. This includes more paint colors, more wheel designs, more brake caliper colors, and even a 29-speaker Meridian stereo system, a clear advantage over the 16-speaker system in the BMW.
The X6 is heavily based on the more mainstream X5, with the primary differences being the more limited drivetrain option list and the sloping, coupe-like roofline. Indeed, the more stylish bodywork is the whole reason why the X6 exists as a separate model at all, so it’s fair to say that this is an important feature. BMW styling is, however, divisive, to say the least. This is intentional, as BMW’s stated goal is a “no such thing as bad press” approach to styling. It is very aggressive, though, and the result is that it lacks the sophistication of the more classical styling you find on the Range Rover Sport. The interior of the X6 is much the same story, with even the base model coming with sport seats as standard. You can opt for more comfortable seats and leather upholstery, both of which are standard on the Range Rover Sport, but it’ll cost you extra. Ventilated front seats will also cost you extra in the X6, and so will a heated steering wheel. It’s really almost shocking how little the same money gets you from BMW.
Winner – Range Rover Sport
The BMW X6 doesn’t quite know what it wants to be. It’s an SUV with a coupe roofline, and a luxury vehicle that has swapped comfort and sophistication for overt aggression. The Range Rover Sport has a much clearer idea of what it’s supposed to be, and that’s why it does a much better job of achieving that goal. That means better looks, better customization options, more drivetrain options, and more standard equipment. And Land Rover South Hills is here to help you find the Range Rover Sport that works best for you.
