We’re comparing the base trims of both vehicles without any optional equipment so that this is as straightforward as possible. And to start with, the pricing is quite similar. But power is where we start seeing the differences. A more powerful engine is available for the XC90, with nearly identical output to the standard engine in the Discovery. But upgrading to this more powerful engine raises the price by enough that it competes with higher trims of the Discovery, which have an even more powerful engine and more standard equipment as well. This more powerful engine, combined with tougher construction, gives the Discovery a towing capacity advantage of nearly a thousand pounds. And if you’re planning to carry your cargo inside the vehicle instead, the Discovery can handle more of that as well. And while fuel tank size isn’t normally much of a deciding factor in choosing a vehicle, this is quite a big difference. A five-gallon difference adds up to fewer stops at the gas station really quickly, and nobody likes having to stop for gas.

Given the similarity in price, you would expect a similar level of equipment on these vehicles, but that’s not quite the case. There are some major handling features, such as torque vectoring and adaptive suspension, that are standard on the Discovery but optional extras on the XC90. It’s the same story with convenience features like rain-sensing wipers and a 360-view camera, both of which are only standard on the Discovery. Lastly, there is a premium, brand-name stereo available for the XC90, but it costs extra, while the Meridian system in the Discovery is standard.
